How I came to join Revolver:
I moved from Oregon to SF in 2008, played with a few other Bay Area teams before finally making the cut in 2011.

Funniest moment or joke on Revolver:
The “whoop” cut.

Favorite game or tournament moment on Revolver:
Labor Day finals 2011

Favorite game or tournament moment outside of Revolver:
College Regionals in Vancouver with EGO, 2006. 2 bids to nationals. The team was really young with 9 true freshmen we went in seeded 3rd behind Stanford and UBC. Saturday started miserably cold, windy, and rainy. Pool play games against Stanford-B and Humboldt went relatively easily. Whitman’s morale had been decimated by the weather and injuries. We finished the game very fast, setting up a 2-hour bye before our crossover game against UBC. We spent the bye in a laundromat, drying our clothes and refueling, then opened the game against UBC with 3 straight breaks — since known as a “laundromat” — before fighting out to a 15-11 victory. Beating UBC set up a finals against Stanford, who we beat 15-10 to take the first bid to Nationals!

College team(s):
Stanford Bloodthirsty (2000-2004)

Former teams:
Kaos (2003-2005)
Revolver (2006-present)

How I came to join Revolver:
It was the natural progression of the early ‘aught Stanford crew. The leadership from Nick Handler and the other founders was exactly what I was looking for in a team.

Funniest moment or joke on Revolver:
There are apparently two Popocafepetls in Prague. We passed out invitations to our massive Worlds party at one of them and showed up at the other. I don’t remember the rest of the night.

Favorite game or tournament moment on Revolver:
A gritty, fast game against Buzz Bullets in the semifinals at Worlds 2010, with a [quarter-]stadium full of people.

Favorite Ultimate player(s) in formative years:
Shreyas Vijaykumar, Stanford. He was ultra-reliable with the disc and on defense, stepped up in the big games, and had a completely cool and respectful demeanor on the field.

Favorite tournament:
Worlds 2010, Prague

What makes ___ so dangerous?
I run fast in straight lines and chase things. Like a dog.

If I didn’t play Ultimate, my main pastime outside of work would be:
Work. Wait…

Favorite sports team outside of Ultimate:
Philadelphia Eagles

In terms of Kanners, how tan are you?
0.5 Kanners

Something unknown about me:
For my first couple years of Ultimate, I was convinced that I could be a great player without ever throwing a flick. Eight years later, I’ve barely recovered.

How I came to join Revolver:
After getting cut in 2010 I stepped up my game in 2011, bringing Robbie lunch at work, sending Dutchy hilarious YouTube links, doing Bart’s laundry, washing Ryo’s car, and letting Martin know that I ALWAYS use Google as my primary search engine.

Funniest moment or joke on Revolver:
Icebathing in the river after Saturday games at ECC.

Favorite game or tournament moment on Revolver:
Playing the Buzz Bullets under the lights in Seattle.

Favorite game or tournament moment outside of Revolver:
My first year on CUT, beating Wisconsin 15-11 in the 2005 Central Regional final on our home turf.

Favorite Ultimate player(s) in formative years:
Dan Ackerstein was my high school coach and longtime mentor, who taught me to play the game for the right reasons.

Favorite tournament:
Nationals

What makes ___ so dangerous?
I have this 65 cm exercise ball that I sit on instead of a desk chair. It’s brilliant. I’m basically making my core stronger every moment of the day. That means that for every single hour my opponents spend on a traditional office chair my ab and back muscles are that much stronger than theirs. And that adds up in October.

Theme song:
The Tallest Man on Earth – Graceland

Pre-game ritual:
I take a moment to remind myself why I play. That usually puts a smile on my face and I feel ready to go.

What I like to eat on Saturday night of a tournament:
Chocolate milk + anything else.

If I didn’t play Ultimate, my main pastime outside of work would be:
Rock climbing

Favorite sports team outside of Ultimate:
Texas Longhorns

Former teams:

The Journeymen (Labor Day 2007)
Revolver (2008-present)

Accolades:
Southwest All-Region (2006-2008)
Mike Gerics 2nd team All-American (2008)

How I came to join Revolver:
I moved out to the Bay Area for work in the summer of 2008 and started talking with then captain Mike Payne. I was leaning toward not playing to make sure I got settled in with my job, plus I had taken three weeks in July to hike the John Muir Trail and had lost 20 lbs, but I played one tournament with Revolver and have been hooked ever since.

Funniest moment or joke on Revolver:
Wow, so many to choose from. Here’s the most family-friendly one that I could think of (ask me in person for others): Chucktown DOMINATING a lovely little restaurant in Sarasota after Nationals in 2008. He busted out his violin and started serenading each table. Daryl was so embarrassed for us that he paid for everyone’s dinner.

Favorite game or tournament moment on Revolver:
Playing Buzz Bullets in the semis at Worlds. I’ll never forget that game, which is too bad because I don’t think it was filmed as it was held at 9:00a so there weren’t very many spectators. The setting was surreal (in a gutted stadium used for communist propaganda demonstrations), and those guys are a true class act and inspiration. I’m still in a little disbelief that we won that game.

Favorite game or tournament moment outside of Revolver:
In 2007 the Southwest region had only one bid to Nationals and Mamabird duked it out with Black Tide in the finals. At one point it was 14-14 in a game to 16, but then we scored and I got the D to help put the game away at 16. I was completely drained after that game. I guess that’s why I love playing competitive Ultimate so much — it’s such a great feeling to put everything on the line and be completely invested in the outcome. It can be crushing in defeat, but success can be the best feeling in your life.

Favorite Ultimate player(s) in formative years:
Gotta be Joshua “Richter” Ackley. He was captain and Callahan winner my first year on Colorado, and I still think he’s the most fiery, competitive player I’ve seen.

Favorite tournament:
Club Nationals

What makes ___ so dangerous?
I like to think that I make everyone around me better. I like the process of building a team, getting better every day, and working things out with the teammates at practice. Also, I’m tall.

Theme song:
Trick Daddy – I’m a Thug

Pre-game ritual:
None. Fire up.

What I like to eat on Saturday night of a tournament:
Pasta, pasta, pasta.

If I didn’t play Ultimate, my main pastime outside of work would be:
After I retire I will learn to play the piano well enough to play Chopin Waltz in C-sharp minor, Op 64, No 2.

Favorite sports team outside of Ultimate:
Denver Nuggets

Until I started playing Ultimate I had never broken a bone. Now I’m up to four: broken ribs/punctured lung; stress fracture in my foot; 5th meta-carpal; broken toe on Beau’s fat foot playing beach Ultimate.
